Great insider info on the MQ's steam engines... strange as it may seem, there was one bid for an entirely different set of main engines... sometime in the early 90's, MQ C/E Pete Jordan, who opened the AQ & is back there now... was cleaning out the Engineering Office filing cabinets. He showed me a proposal from the Dravo yard in Pittsburgh, for gas turbine engines. They planned an electic paddlewheel powered by electricity from the gas turbines. Certainly would have used a LOT more fuel, and as for vibration... Happily, as you depict, the MQ has The Real Thing for steam engines. He also showed me a drawing of the engines, wherein they were termed "steam impulse engines"... so, I guess she has impulse power, laddie, just no warp drive...I'm off to the MQ Sunday, hope to see some of the Steamboaters from this discussion board in the coming season...
