Capt Ware, Capt Foley and especially Captain Norman Hillman were my grandfather's favorite pilots. As he spent a great deal of time in the pilothouse, and even later after the "ruling"...when he was "escorted" by Capt Hillman up to the pilothouse to join him. I remember one time when my grandfather, my parents and I were riding the DQ, on the UMR, and a Coast Guard or a C.O.E person came aboard via a boat, near LaCrosse, I think, and made a beeline to the pilothouse. My dad, mom and I knew Grandpa was up there and we feared the worse, but my grandfather was introduced as Captain Zahn from the Great Lakes, he was "quizzed" briefly to his former "credentials" to which his brief answers satisfied the gov't visitor!!! I figure as the statue of limitations is long passed, I can share this now!!
