Subject: Re: A Quickie about Jimmy Carter/Pilot the DQ

We were in Hannibal when that accident happened in 1982. My parents, my sister and I went down for a short overnight stay in Hannibal, delivering Wisconsin cheese and kringles to the boat. We then retired to the hotel that evening, unaware of the events that were transposing at the lock. We then left the next morning totally unaware the Delta Queen had slid into the dam gate. Upon our return to Racine, my brother, who had opted to stay home, told us about the DQ being in an accident, and we didn't believe him, that is until the news came on that evening!! I believe the boat was on it's way to St. Louis, and my Grandfather Zahn was enroute to St. Louis to ride the boat, he instead drove up to Hannibal to see what was going on, and he did transport a few of the crew back down to St. Louis so they could fly back home! I remember riding on my 2nd trip in 1981 and in the pilothouse was my Grandfather Zahn and my dad and Rip Ware, who was the pilot, and we were near the mouth of the Chippewa River on the UMR, and there was worry about the DQ getting stuck on a sandbar, because of low water and the amount of silt the Chippewa left out into the Mississippi. I can still remember Capt Ware reading the bow depth gage over the pa system, and when we were clear he was so "matter of fact" and he then said "we in the clear, alright", and clicked the pa off and went about talking like nothing ever happened!
