Subject: "Riverboat Legacy" Exhibition Opens May 31st at Cape Girardeau

"Riverboat Legacy: A Gift from the Golden Eagle River Museum" opens May 31st in the Southeast Regional Museum of Southeast Missouri State University at Cape Girardeau. Riverboat enthusiasts (and the public) are invited to the opening reception, to be held on Saturday, June 11th from 2-4 PM. There will also be family activities that day (museum opens at 9 AM) with a special area for children which features knot tying, and a miniature pilothouse, etc. The museum is located in Memorial Hall on the campus. The exhibit features riverboat models, photographs, bells, whistles, navigation equipment, silverware and many other artifacts. Also included are the counter from the Eagle Boat Store and Capt. Buck Leyhe's mahogany rolltop desk. The exhibition will remain on display until August 14th, when the artifacts will be stored to await their permanent installation in a special gallery of the new River Campus Museum which is scheduled to be completed in August, 2007, according to Dr. Stanley Grand, the museum director who arranged for the transfer of the artifacts following the closure of the Golden Eagle River Museum in St. Louis last fall. The Cape Girardeau museum is open from 9-4 and further information can be found on the University website. Dr. Grand tells me that a "photo tour" of the riverboat exhibit will soon be online. This is an exhibition well worth seeing!
