Subject: Re: DQ Co. gambling bill progress

The slot machines that would be used would probably be the newer electronic ones forcing charges to be a room service add on to bills similiar to bar bills. It would use a magnetic card like they use at Disney World. However, this would still require space, additional crew, security measures, and as I said may bear on technical resources. Even a closed circuit cable feed from one of the tracks that DN operates is more difficult on a floating hotel than a stationary place. But since DN is based in New York state, I am sure they have plenty of experience with Off Track Betting.

I also maintain that casinos generally have smoking and a lack of clocks and windows. Why ride a boat up and down the river if not to enjoy the scenery along the way?

I don't deny that killing time gaming is an activity I have done. As a matter of fact I did more of that in my tenure with the boats than I had over the previous 10 years before. And, this is coming from a person who travelled 2 or 3 times a year to Vegas on business including every Consumer Electronics Show and Games and Technology Trade Shows across the USA- the big E in LA, the game developers conference in San Jose, California. I have never been an all work and no play sort of person so I got my share of gaming with all that travel along with listening to all the people involved with Internet Gaming. Yet, I certainly threw away more money to local economies as a crew member aboard the boats. If your time off is 3 am, casinos are open all night so an hour or two of play in a casino can be very relaxing and fun.

I am also reluctant to rush to judgement either or paint as dire a picture as some. Remember that not too many of us were too keen about the AQ schedule but it has brought more people into steamboating. Also, what we discussed before about 3 and 4 day cruises is true. For crew, there is really as much or more work involved with faster turnovers but usually there is also more cash because the people on a 3 day holiday are more willing to spend than the 7 day cruisers. In that light, it looks like DN is just trying to make sure it has a good producing cash cow. What is confusing to me and I am sure others have their opinion on this- does the DQ support the others (AQ and MQ) with her almost always full load of passengers or do the others support her?

I think the main objective may to be to increase demand for the DQ so that people have to book years in advance like they previously had to do.

For me personally, having casinos on board would detract from my experience as a passenger but I know many good friends who would disagree with me on that.

But as Darin said in starting this thread- same song, different dance.

Cheers
Elaine
