Steamboating colleagues: Capt. Bill Judd and I have been E=Mailing. He recalls some interesting information Re: ISLAND QUEEN'S roof collapse and forwarded to me. [*] = notes.
'The ISLAND QUEEN incident occurred on April 27, 1922 as the boat was passing New Richmond as part of a big river parade. Judy's photo shows her landed at the foot of Augusta Street, New Richmond. Here she discharged the injured, who were taken into Cincinnati by the 'Blackline' railway. Lela Vornholt's house [*Member of S&D and later prominent yacht club operator in New Richmond with husband Don.] shows just ahead of her stacks.
On board were the Ohio and Kentucky congressional delegation, several regiments of troops to guard President Harding, so the QUEEN soon departed and continued her trip up to Point Pleasant.
The lucky part of this story is that President Harding was scheduled to ride the ISLAND QUEEN and his designated area was right under the roof that gave way. However Harding changed his mind at the Cincinati Public Landing and chose to ride up on the Str. CAYUGA with the famous Tony Meldahl.' [*Tony Meldahl was a cat's meow pilot famous on the QUEEN CITY etc. Meldahl Lock/Dam was dedicated in his honor. His daughter, Louise Meldahl-Carley, was the wife of prominent Memphis newspaper man Jack Carley, friend of President Franklin Roosevelt. Louise attended many S&D meetings with Mrs. Theo Cook. Theo's husband was captain of the MISSISSIPPI/BECKY THATCHER. Keith can tell us more when he returns from vacation in the deep south.]
Cheers and thanks to Bill Judd for the data. R. Dale Flick
