Why the story did not surface on here may be because Captain Hawley and I are the only two still kicking who witnessed the near-miss down beneath the stove.
When the second close call happened, I was at home in Covington and not working on the QUEEN, but heard about it on the radio as it was happening, so I jumped in the tin lizzy and lit out for the Cincinnati Public Landing. When I got onto the Suspension Bridge, I looked toward the DELTA QUEEN and my heart started pounding. It looked like a dense cloud of white smoke was rising from the boat. To my great relief it turned out to be a huge plastic tarp attached to the Sun deck with one end loose and blowing in the breeze and lifting skyward like rising smoke. The landing was filled with fire trucks, and when I was able to find a parking place, I rushed to the boat to find the BIG E standing on the landing being interviewed by the local TV types. He later assured me that the QUEEN had again escaped with only very minor damage.
