Pete:That would be fun to find a Volkswagon like that. No, unfortunately the President did not get to ride in the Volkswagon. The company had already discontinued it's use. That car sure saved a lot of shoe leather running mail to the Post Office, etc. There was another somewhat less famous "sinking" of the little orange doodlebug once during highwater when we had to make a landing at the Corp of Engineers mat fields near Helena, Arkansas. To get to town you had to cross the wide mat field and then ford a creek on the other side before going over top the leeve. The Houskeeping Steward, David Martin and I used the car first and returned when Captain Blum, Terry Severns, Cruise Director and the Chief Steward needed to go to town. They made the mistake of asking us for instructions on crossing the creek. The shallow part was marked with some long skinny poles stuck in the mud and you had to stay on one side or the creek bottom dropped away very quickly. We told them about the poles and should have left it at that. But no, I had to get descriptive and threw in the fact that there were some guys gigging fish at that spot and to stay to the right of the guys gigging fish. How was I supposed to know they would mover to the other side of the poles to gig their darn fish. It was really something to see how fast an orange volkswagon can sink with three grown men inside. Also amazing is how fast three grown men can abandon car. Most of the passengers witnessed this little sporting activity, since town was so far away they just stayed on board. I do not know how they got the car out of that creek. I was busy saving my hide crouched under the desk in the Purser's Office hiding from Captain Blum.
