Lexi Palmore's "Steamboat One" sign was a major source of pride for all concerned including the President and especially the crew. Lexi worked feveriously to finish the sign in time. She is a great artist and it could not have been more professional. There is a great photograph of the first family standing on the bridge of the Pilot House waving to the crowd in St. Louis. Lexie is not only a good artist but probably the most skillful pilot that I can remember. I think I could speak for the entire crew that it was nothing but a pleasure serving the President and the First Family that week. It was the only time that I can remember the steamboat running exactly on time and things operating so smooth. We used to refer to things running on "Steamboat Standard Time" meaning if we were scheduled to arrive in a port at 9:00 a.m. and we got there before 1:00 p.m. we thought we were on time. It didn't happen that way on the Presidential Cruise.
