Judy is absolutely right about the Carter's dining with different people each night. The first night out was the Sailing Buffet and there were no table assignments. The President and Mrs. Carter got their plates like everyone else and went through the line. They looked around and saw a nice table by the window with only two people siting there. I was told they went to the couple, introduced themselves, and asked if they could join them. The Secret Service advance team had inspected the entire boat and left instructions on where the President should sit in the Dining Room, Texas Lounge and so on. "Never give him a table by a window, always a private table." The President would have none of that. He sat where he wanted and had a good time. The Secret Service even started to relax after a couple of days on board.
An addendum to the storm story: The Secret Service had some ski type boats (4 I think, 2 on each side) that ran along to keep any smaller boat away from the DQ. During the storm they were nearly swamped. It took a little while for them to bail out and catch back up to us after it was over. The President even tried his hand at fishing from one of the small boats on one occasion. I donít think that he caught much.
