As far as the painting crew was concerned, I think they may have been hired from temporary agencies along the route. I remember there was some Cincinnati Office staff in charge of them who left the boat each night, stayed in a motel for the night, and caught up to us the next day to continue painting. I remember thinking at that time that they could not have gotten much rest chasing after a steamboat like that. Anyone who has had to wait on the riverbank for a steamboat traveling at 8 mph knows how slow that can be. But just try to catch up to one that is ahead of you. It is like trying to catch a speeding car. Why?
