One thing I've noticed about the self-driven barges is that they frequently are so heavily loaded that their main decks are awash. Also, I wonder what the economics are for these mom and pop operations. The competition must he stiff with so many of these boats that carry small loads in comparison to the tows in America. Every river I've seen in Germany (Rhine, Main, Elbe) has a virtual non stop parade of these boats. They are very interesting to observe, for sure. -Jim Herron
