Subject: "Life on the Mississippi"


I appreciate your posts and insights. I agree with you about what I would have preferred from the book, but I am not about to criticize Samual Clemmons, who is likely the best American writer ever. It is indeed a pity his great experience and writing skills did not capture more of the subject.

I think of his book every time I transit a section of the Cumberland (at Gower's Island) that has an upper and lower light. At night the outline of the hills would lead one to believe the river bends to the left coming upstream, whereas it actually bends to the right. I think of Mark Twains's description of learning 4 different rivers each time I go through there. It also is the best example of a crossing mark I know.

BTW, the new owner's of Barbara Mandrell's property took down the lighted crosses that marked that area coming upbound for yeas. I miss them, as they always maid me feel I was finally home.
