They bought the machinery off of the DK, flew the
necessary parts here and stored the rest near Cincy. At
the time, it was the largest single item shipped into
our airport. When fixed, the boat headed back for
Cincy, not to get to St.P. until the next year. We had
the old slanting levee then. One headline said: DQ
passengers on top of the news. A car's parking brake
failed and the car rolled down into the river, striking
the DQ's hull as the passengers were eating breakfast
and watching it roll toward them. No damage to the
boat. A young lady from RI was put on the boat by her
parents to finish the trip. Turned out to be a
pyromaniac. After extinguishing a few small fires, the
crew figured it out and she was removed. The passengers
were offered train rides back to Cincy or up to St.
Paul and back. About half the pax stayed on board. Our
locals happily provided escorted car tours for the
passengers. CW Stoll was on board and told of touring
the Kahlke Boatyards and the Hennepin Canal thanks to
locals. At that time we had the 20th St. Strip, not
that that kind of entertainment would interest the
highly cultured DQ pax! My family would go down every
night and sit on our campstools and look. Of course
this was pre-calliope days, so there was no
entertainment. we just looked at the boat. Little did
I know that boat was to change my life 19 years
later...
