Hi, gang: Judy's memories of the DQ at Rock Island really jolted me. Judy, you're one of the few people around who recall that incident personally when the DQ 'ran through' herself, threatening the future of the boat. The failure was on the 'in stroke,' thus avoiding any of the pitman etc., from shooting out into the river. Fortunately, it stopped and didn't go through the adjacent bulkhead. Could have been far worse. I've heard Virginia Bennett (she was aboard) tell of it along with the late Terry Beckett, Mary Greene-Stewart and a neighbor or ours who was a nurse on vacation. A couple of the guys got minor cuts and abrasions while working and she 'fixed them up' with a medical kit. Wasn't that the incident when the GREENE LINE had FLYING TIGERS AIR CO., fly the needed spare part in from the DELTA KING? I'll consult Letha Greene's 'Long Live the DELTA QUEEN.' The accident event got press coverage here in Cincinnati at the time. Terry Beckett used to tell (I think he was 'striker' at the time) how they used bags of ice in an attempt to contract and break the cylinder head loose where it was jammed. They played heck cutting through that high grade steel to get the engine set up and back in operation. I believe the passengers were entertained by watching the work and/or taking shore excursions in the vicinity. Thanks for the memories, Judy. I wonder who else out there recalls that near tragedy? That was a long time ago. Regards, R. Dale Flick
