The Judds' painting of the ORCO by Dorothea Frye has been to S&D already. They brought it for Dorothea's memorial service, which was open to all S&D attendees. Bill, when you write that book, you need to contact Vi Foley, whose husband Bill was a captain for Orco, in particular on the Illinois River. He brought the Mark Twain into Chicago and then joined Orco. Vi has many of his company letters and other paperwork from those days. She is one of the lurkers on here and phoned me tonight after seeing this thread. Capt. Foley was such a quiet person and not prone to mention his accomplishments, but I do think his first class license was longer than anyone's, including of those who bragged about having the most miles. I quote from his license:...also first class pilot on the Mississippi River from Cut Off Light, La(Mile 88.8 AHP) to Minneapolis Minnesota; Old River and the Atchafalaya River and Basin from the Mississippi River to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway; Gulf Intracostal Waterway from Harvey,Louisiana lock to High Island,Texas; Calcasieu River between Choupique Island and West Lake,La.; Houston Ship channel from Morgan Point to Sinclair refining Company docks,Houston,Texas; Ohio River from its mouth to Millwood,WVa.;Kanawha River from its mouth to Charleston, WVA.; Illinois River and Waterway from its mouth to Chicago,Ill.(including Chicago River, Drainage Canal and Harbor).
