Hi, Barb H:
Applause indeed for Bill Judd's fine article in the Dec. S&D REFLECTOR, 'THE RISE OF A RIVER EMPIRE - THE OHIO RIVER COMPANY.' Great text and pictures on the interesting facets of a rags to riches founder and a mighty empire. Bill and Darlene Judd own a fine oil painting of the Str. ORCO by the late river artists and S&D veteran Dorothea Frye. It's a beauty and Bill should truck it to S&D for a full viewing.

The Dec. REFLECTOR is a dandy filled with dramatic color photos of the September 'flash flood' that struck Marietta snapped by Fred Rutter. Contributions by Lil Smith and Sylvia Metzinger record what many of us experienced. Fred Rutter just mailed here yesterday a stellar 38 Pg. limited edition book titled MORE THAN I BARGAINED FOR relating the September flood. Again, his photos in color and map are supplemented with great text enclosed in a plastic spiral binder. I can see so much of Capt. Fred Way in grandson Fred Rutter's writing.

Woody Rutter featured an entrancing piece A WEEK ON THE TENNESSEE BELLE, by Frances Shaw written in/around 1926. I don't know who Mrs. Shaw was but she shows the talents of an exceptional writer and experienced traveler describing a week trip on the TENNESSEE BELLE departing St. Louis "every Monday." That was real 'steamboatin' on a far from luxurious boat built as the KENTUCKY in 1904. Wouldn't we all like to hop the TB for a similar trip this summer? It's a fine issue and the return of color work on the covers and inside is gratifying.

Those of you who aren't yet S&D members/subscribers should write: Mrs. Bee Rutter, Secretary S&D C/O 126 Seneca Drive, Marietta, OH 45750. Subscriptions for 2005 are $20 yearly with $1 extra for additional family members (If so inclined). Four issues a year is a true bargain. Come join the fun!

Cheers,
R. Dale Flick
