Earlier last month I was on the DQ from Galveston to New Orleans. It was my first trip on the DQ since the reorganization, and wow, was it great. The boat looked great, the crew were upbeat, the food fantastic, and the waterways traveled very interesting.
There were also a great bunch of passengers aboard. John Mullen and DQ Peggy from these pages were delightful people to meet, and it's always a pleasure when Joan and Richard Peters are aboard! Mike Williams was roof captain. He really seems to have all of the makings of a great captain, and I remember when he was a deckhand. Tempest fugit! Tad K. was chief engineer, and had the Ole Gal pattin' her feet across Galveston Bay. Toots was doing a super job as Riverlorian. Her love for the river and steamboats just has to impress any newcommer to steamboatin'!
After the trip was over in New Orleans, I stopped by and had lunch with "Doc" Hawley. WOW what a treasure trove of information. He told me that the DQ Co. has asked him to ride up from Memphis to Cincinnati on the DQ in April, and he is leaning towards doing it too! If you haven't met "Doc", the April 25th. trip is a fun one to make and meet him. Also the DQ and AQ will be pacing each other up the Ohio River, The Great Kentucky Derby Steamboat Race will be ran in Louisville, and the DQ arrives home in Cincinnati after a two year absence. I don't think steamboatin' can get any better than that, folks!
