Jane, thanks for sharing yet another in a multitude of stories about life on the DQ. Makes me wonder just how many folks have departed this life on the boat. I recall a couple getting on in St. Louis for a trip to St. Paul, knowing that the man had only a short time to live. They had always wanted to ride the DQ and were determined to go no matter what. Well, I awakened early one morning to the sound of the stage being lowered and knew it was supposed to be a cruising day. I went out on deck to see a hearse backing up to the stage (we were at Nauvoo) and learned that the man had passed away during the night. Later on that trip, during a stop at Prairie du Chien, a news reporter was asking Capt. Wagner all sorts of questions, one of which was "Has this been an eventful trip for you Captain?" Capt. Ernie winked at me as he bellowed, "Well, I had a son-of-a-gun die on me in his room and we had to put his body ashore at Nauvoo. Would ya call that eventful?!" The reporter looked pale, gathered his notebook and camera and fled across the stage!
