Subject: Down on the Levee at Louisville

Before meeting a friend for dinner on New Year's Day, I took a walk along the wharf. The steamer BELLE OF LOUISVILLE was aglow in her holiday lights and tugged gently at her lines in the early evening stillness. She was the ever beautiful sight that never fails to thrill my soul. As I strolled alongside the venerable sternwheeler listening to the river lapping quietly around her big red paddlewheel, I was thinking that it was 88 years ago in January of 1915 when she made her first trip down the Ohio from her birthplace at Pittsburgh. Also much in my thoughts was the fact that my first job was on the boat some 32 years ago when I "fell under the spell of the Belle" and of the many wonderful people who have trod her decks. Like the DQ, the BELLE is a national treasure that needs to be kept in the public eye to ensure that she's here for future generations of steamboat enthusiasts. Both the BELLE and DQ have played starring roles in my life - and continue to do so - and I hope that everyone who loves steamboats will come to Louisville next summer to ride the last of the Mississippi style steamboats in operation. The DQ and her sisters have been saved. Hallelujah! Now, please don't forget the BELLE! Thanks and keep up steam! Keith
