If my mother , Letha Greene, told Dale not to invest personal money into the river business, it's because she saw the Greenes do it and lose a great deal of it. Local banking institutions came on the scene eventually, and when mom needed to meet with them, she took Horace Lyle and Andy Lodder with her so there'd be a man around. The bankers treated her like a dizzy broad which she wasn"t. Why didn't Capt. Mary have trouble with the business men? Because she brought her 2 strappin' sons with her, Capt. Tom and Capt. Chris, and if the businessmen picked on Grandma, daddy in particular would tell'em where to put it, in specific terms. The people who tried to help save the Delta Queen in '57 or so all belonged to the "OUGHTA CLUB", telling mom what she OUGHTA do, but nary a one of 'em would cough up some rescue money. She even sought a sale by some millionaire Steamboat freaks whose name Y'all know, but they suddenly didn't know her as they freeloaded on many a trip{or they talked about her like a dog}. It wasn't until Dick Simonton came along that we got big bucks in Savethe DQ . Beware of the OUGHTA club. They ain't gonna give you s--t. Again, the big bucks have to be informed, and if their whim takes a fancy to the Goldenrod's longevity, maybe there's hope. Tellin' it like it is, Jane Greene
