I learned early on to avoid assuming that accents indicate stupidity. When some northeasterner patronizes his southern opponent in an argument because of his localized argot, the southerner immediately gains the upper hand. The same is true of the literate soul who thinks a garage mechanic who talks like Gomer Pyle is an idiot. They are on the verge of defeat.
