As I understand it, John Hartford's collection is tied up in some very messy litigation and the "dusty boxes" are in storage somewhere. I just remembered that one of Benton's ancestors was a silversmith in Cincinnati and made silver water coolers for steamboats. The late Dorothea Frye owned a silver ladle marked DUHME. As you said, had Benton lived beyond his short 23 years on this earth, he undoubtedly would have been BIG into steamboating and the preservation of its history. Ruth Ferris once said that "Steamboats and the river were the breath of life to Benton."
