Judy,
I can only imagine what they'll charge to carve a camera and box of chocolate cookies on a tombstone...but, that is fortunatly, how you will be remembered by a number of steamboat crew through out the Mississippi River watershed. Of course I am sure we have many, many , many years for that!
As for the DQ's calliope billboard...I'll have to check it out for myself on the weekend of 26,Oct as I am planning on traveling to see the boat in Nashville, TN. (it is the closest she is getting to Louisville this year).
So it looks orange.....ICK!
But, you are right...it is just a little thing compared to the whole boat.
Who knows, this might be someone's way to show the powers that be what a useless device this is. Well, not to the pilots.
However, there could be something a little more esthetically pleasing added in it's place (ig: a grey sheet of plywood, only as high as the tallest whistle...this way, it can reflect sound, not catch the colour of the "aurora effect" lights, and be as non-visible as possible.).
After all, the beauty of those Thomas J. Nichol steam calliope whistles (both in the visual and audible sence) is the reason people congregate at the calliope.
