Dale; You really don't need a light meter..try this: on a bright sunny day set your camera lens opening to F16 and the shutter speed to the ASA number of the film....so good old Plus-X film, ASA 125, would be set at 125th of a second. That should give you a good exposure and that's the way the film manufacturers determine the speed of their films. I know there are chemicals you can get to give a B/W print sepia tones, but I think that really old photo's sepia tones has to do with the emulsion on the paper aging; but I'm no expert.
