Dear steamboating colleagues: Talked to Capt. Bill Judd this AM and he recalled the fate of the last ISLAND QUEEN'S swinging stage for me. At the time of the IQ's explosion and loss pictures show that steel stage running from the bow of the boat over to the landing in Pittsburgh. Ed Schott, of CONEY ISLAND CO., had the stage returned to Cincinnati. For years it was used as a bridge across a small stream down from my house near route 52--passed it in the car a zillion times. I recall the surviving rail posts--four of them--at either end of the stage. It was wide enough for a car to drive over.
When Anderson Township acquired the property for addition to the new Woodland Mound Park, the stage was removed and was on the land to make way for a new bridge. Capt. Bill Judd showed interest and asked the work crew about it as he thought of hauling it up to his property. Bill was away on river business and, when he returned, it had already been 'torched' into pieces. Guess somebody forgot to spread the word. I've got a 35 mm. color slide of the stage here in my stuff but would have to get a print or convert for posting.
Capt. John Beatty had lots to say about the wreck of the ISLAND QUEEN and his part in the salvage. The fire following the explosion was so intense that John said they found silver coins in tubes from the IQ's purser office melted/fused into round cylinders. John told me had had some of those coin tubes around his house. Wonder what ever happened to them? Barbara Huffman could add to this posting. Cheers, R. Dale Flick
