Travis: The problem was due to the condensate being drained by steam traps from a pressurized steam manifold. If the pressure in the manifold was ten psi (guess on my part), the condensate water would have a temperature of about 240 degrees F...as soon as the condensate water hit the lower pressure of the atmosphere it was in a "superheated state". that is to say the temperature of the water was well above the boiling point of the water at atmospheric pressure(nominally 212 degrees F...about 210 at river elevations). When the hot superheated 240 degree water reached the outside of the steam system, it found itself at atmospheric pressure...causing the water, or much of it, to immediately flash back into steam with likly much more than enough pressure to force its way past the drain P trap in the bar drain. A deeeeeeeeeeper "P" trap in the bar drain would have likely solved the problem. The "P" trap is that goose neck in the drain that stays filled with water to prevent odors and gasses from coming out...The normal trap is not designed for any but the very lowest of pressures.
