The Tangley was not a steam instrument. They ran on air, provided from a blower attached to the case the whistles/keyboard were mounted on. Miner Manufacturing produces new replica Tangley instruments. They are virtually indistinguishable from the originals. They have a website at www.calliopes.com
However, you bring up an interesting point. The MQ condensate problem was problematic. I have discussed this with several people. The idea was the condensate would weigh more (being water, or more aptly; liquid) and should have just gone down the proverbial drain.
Well, as we all know, the steam is a vapor and weighs less than the atmosphere. Therefore, the result was a steam table, rather than the planned drain in the Calliope Bar.
In theory, the idea worked...except for that pesky steam!
Now the calliope on the MQ drains to the atmosphere with two steam traps on either side of the manifold.
