Save the Delta Queen Rally at Chattanooga, July 1

June 28, 2008

Save the Delta Queen Rally at Chattanooga
The unscheduled stop of the Delta Queen at Chattanooga, the only stop of the DQ at this city this year, gives the opportunity to rally for the Delta Queen exemption. The Save the Delta Queen Campaign is calling Delta Queen supporters to meet at the Chattanooga landing on July 1 at noon for a non formal rally.

The Save the Delta Queen Campaign Team has just issued a press release covering the visit of the Delta Queen to Chattanooga:

Delta Queen to Visit Chattanooga Tuesday, July 1
CINCINNATI - On Tuesday, June 1, 2008, the Steamboat Delta Queen will make an unexpected stop in Chattanooga. The boat was scheduled to arrive in and depart from Cincinnati that day, but the Coast Guard?s closure of the Ohio River near Paducah mandated a change in the itinerary (revised version attached). The Queen is scheduled to be docked at the Riverfront landing from 4:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. Passengers and crew members will be available for interviews.
The Delta Queen is the last traditional steamboat carrying overnight passengers on America?s inland waterways and for that reason has been designated a National Historic Landmark. In 1966, she was inadvertently caught in the technical provisions of the Safety of Life at Sea Act, which was intended to cover ocean-going ships, not riverboats. Recognizing the difference between boats that operate on rivers, within yards of the shore, and ships that sail the high seas, Congress established an exemption for the Delta Queen in 1968. Since then, the exemption has been renewed nine times, in virtually every case by near-unanimous votes in both the House and the Senate.
Without congressional action, the current exemption will expire on November 1, 2008.Bipartisan legislation to extend the exemption, H.R. 3852, was introduced by Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH) on October 16, 2007. Congressman Zach Wamp of Chattanooga is one of the bill?s 31 cosponsors. The bill remains in the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, where it awaits action.
