Charles Greene, member of the famous Greene river family that once owned the Delta Queen and many other packet boats on the Ohio and Mississippi River system has sent an open letter to the US Congress, asking for urgent action regarding an exemption for the Delta Queen.

The Str. Portland had ran aground near Cascade Locks on the Columbia River Friday afternoon, June 27, 2008. No injuries nas been reported amongst the 97 passengers.

The unscheduled stop of the Delta Queen at Chattanooga, the only stop of the DQ at this city this year, gives the opportunity to rally for the Delta Queen exemption. The Save the Delta Queen Campaign is calling Delta Queen supporters to meet at the Chattanooga landing on July 1 at noon for a non formal rally.

For the June 24 and July 1 sailings of the Delta Queen schedules have changed due to a closure of the Ohio River. Some American Queen cruises on the Upper Mississippi River in June and July had also been re-scheduled due to high water conditions and flooded landings.

Passengers booked for cruises on the American Queen departing after November 8, and Empress of the North departing after August 2, are reporting that they were informed about the cancellation of their cruises by Majestic America Line.

Delta Queen supporters are rallying to save the historic steamboat at Marietta, OH, on June 12 at the Ohio River Levee while the Delta Queen herself is in port. Speakers at the event will be from the American Sternwheel Association, Senator Joy Padgett, state and local government representatives, and other noted officials.
