February 15th, 2013

The American Queen Steamboat Company has announced two Baseball Legends journeys for 2013 during which guests will hear the inside stories of some of the sport’s greatest plays from special onboard guests who were on the field during historic games. Among the speakers will be Ron Blomberg, baseball’s first designated hitter and called “the Jewish Mickey Mantle,” as well as Art Shamsky, who made baseball history when he smacked four homeruns in four consecutive at-bats for the Cincinnati Reds.

“This summer the American Queen is taking guests for a walk down memory lane with baseball icons sharing tales from the diamond,” explains American Queen Steamboat Company President and COO Ted Sykes. “The largest and most opulent riverboat in the world will host some of the most legendary baseball players and insiders of our lifetime.”

This are Baseball Legends journeys for the 2013 season:

  • – St. Louis to Cincinnati: Beginning July 19 and ending July 27, 2013, with veteran umpire and the first to wear glasses Al Clark; Major League Baseball’s first designated hitter and New York Yankee (1969, 1971-76) Ron Blomberg; and 1969 World Champion Art Shamsky who played for the Mets from 1968 to 1972.
  • – Cincinnati to Pittsburgh: Beginning July 26 and concluding August 1, 2013, will feature former Texas Rangers, New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves outfielder (1978-1986) Billy Sample; Major League prankster Jay Johnstone, who played for seven teams (1971-1985) including the Los Angeles Dodgers twice; and Al Clark once again.

Former Associated Press newsman Dan Schlossberg, author of 35 baseball books including “Nothing to Hide: My Journey from the Big Leagues to the Big House”, written with former umpire, Al Clark, will serve as the host for the July 19-27, 2013 journey.
