A heavy pole between the two paddle wheels of an sidewheeler over which hog chains were strung to hold the heavy load of the paddle wheels. Disappeared in the 1950s as the weight of the paddle wheels concentrated on this single pole that therefore tended to crack a hole into the bottom of the boat's hull.
