rudder stock

An upright timber or set of timbers built into a member fastened into the rudder at base and to the top of which is fastened the tiller. In more recent times these stocks are built of steel. The rudder stock on a sternwheel river steamer is usually set vertically but sometimes it assumes a 90-degree angle with the stern rake.
