roof captain

Besides the pilot, there also was a roof captain, who stood on the roof for landings and departures, as the sides of the boat often couldn't be seen from the pilothouse. Today's roof captain is the Master or Captain of the boat. Pilot's rank is also Captain, but usually a person referring to the Captain is talking about the administrative head, the one out on the roof or wing bridge.
