A floating residence on the river: these are found in infinite variety and pattern but the usual one contains two or three rooms, has a smoke pipe jutting through the roof, has an outside toilet precariously hung on one end, contains a man and a woman and a crop of children, a pet dog, and there is a dishpan hung on a nail just outside the back door. The smaller editions are called shantyboats.
