chute

A narrow channel frequently restricted by a dike. A dug chute is made artifically by dredging. Often no more than a bayou or creek, the chute delineated the back side of an island. Like cutoffs, chutes could be navigated in high water by up bound boats. This usually resulted in a shorter running distance compared to the channel side.
