bull rails
Dressed planks, usually of pine or poplar, inserted between the sections spacing the stationaries along the outboard sides of the main deck along the guards. Usually four or five such bull rails are placed in each section, creating a rail fence. They are set in slots so they may easily be removed when necessary. Found only on packets.
