bucket
The bucket is a wooden blade, or paddle of a paddlewheel which dip in the river and propel the boat. Planks so used are called bucket planks or bucket boards. On larger vessels a single bucket consisted of several heavy boards bolted together. The extreme depth to which they submerge is called the dip.
