When attached to the end of a bell cord suspended from overhead in the pilothouse, a brass ring; when attached to the end of a bell cord appearing on the bell stand, a brass handle - or a wooden one on cheaper boats - which the pilot in each case pulls to ring signal bells to the engine room.
