Default Boilers

I've noticed that while many (most?) of the newer steamers have boilers fired from the aft end, all of the old packets were fired forward. When, and why, did this changeover occur? Did it come in with oil as a fuel or does it have to do with forced draft, or something else entirely? Please pardon my ignorance
