Default Whatta Tale!

Dale,
I was shivering just reading your delightful tale. There is nothing colder than a steamboat with no fire under her tubes. You totally described what it was like to winter the DELTA QUEEN in Cincinnati. Those dreadful winters helped drive the company to seek warmer digs down in the semi-tropic climes of the Crescent City. Now after Hurricane Katrina wrecked NOLA, we hear the boats will be operating out of St. Louie, so the fellows gathered 'round the fat potbelly stove, up at the General Store, have been wondering whether the winters at that Upper Mississippi River city will be a repeat of those you pictured when the QUEEN wintered-over at the Foot of Broadway in the Q-City.

What a scene that impromptu choir from down deep in the Fire Box hold must have been! Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime event for sure. Yes, there will be some carols sung, later on around the stove at the General Store as soon as the jug circumnavigates the red-hot perimeter of iron set in the middle of the floor a time or two more. Last year, folks across the river in Rising Sun were calling and complaining after the caterwauling reached fever pitch.

The RH Shipyard is closed until sometime, yet announced, after the New Year. So from Fannie, Cliff, Y/T, and all the crew: Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for the New Year.
