SS ADMIRAL addenda
We were discussing the ADMIRAL's travel history in the scrapping thread. Annie Blum has emailed me some information she found in her notes. Both she and her husband Jim worked on the ADMIRAL, and Annie is part of the Streckfus clan. Anyway, she asked me to post this for her: The ADMIRAL went to New Orleans twice to replace the PRESIDENT. The Prez was remodeled and air-conditioned in the winter of 1974-75 and dieselized during the winter of 1977-78. Both times the work was done in St. Louis and the ADMIRAL went to NOLA to take the Prez' place. The ADMIRAL went to NOLA in April 1973 for a regular hull inspection. The ADMIRAL went back to NOLA under her own power in 1979 for a 'quick trip' to Avondale Shipyards. This, unfortunately, turned into an extended stay, with quite a bit of vandalism. It was the beginning of the end for her. She eventually came back to St. Louis, went to Paducah, and back to St. Louis where what's left of her is the casino. As Annie says, "She did more traveling as an orphan than any other time." Thanks for this definitive info, Annie.
