Default An important day in excursion boat history

John Carroll, a fourth generation U.S. Streckfus, emailed me this "Today in History" tidbit and said he forgot his password to post it, so here it is:

Today on May 31, 1852, Balthasar Streckfus and Anna Marie Schaab Streckfus and two children arrived in New Orleans on the Mobile. They were emigrating from Lauderbach, Baden. Balthasar and Anna Marie were the parents of Commodore John Streckfus, founder of Streckfus Steamers.

The remaining Streckfus house in Rock Island was built by Balthasar and Anna Marie and was where the children spent their childhood. Balthasar and Anna Marie are buried in Calvary Cemetery just about 50 yards from the Commodore's gravesite.
