electricity on steamboats

Default electricity on steamboats

Just got a question from a novelist planning a story that partially takes place on Mississippi River steamboats around 1899:

Did steamboats at that time have electric light? And if not, what else did they use? gas lights? candles? and outside on the decks: simple torches? fire wood in iron baskets?

To my understanding, steam turbines have been invented about ten years earlier but I'm not sure whethere they've been used as early as 1899 to generate electric power on steamboats ...
