Hi all,
I have a six account books which were on loan to the Indiana Historical Society Library. These are now back with me. I am interested in selling them. Let me tell you a little about them.
To the best of my knowledge these books are the original account books for the firm of Schwab & Heilman of Carlinville, Illinois for the years 1872 - 1900. Two of the account books are of particular interest for research in the field of economic and labor history because of their detailed records.
The account book for 1872 contains the records of the steamboat "Nicholas Wall" for three round-trip voyages between St. Louis and New Orleans. Records of the trips include passenger lists, with places of embarkation and debarkation indicated as well as fares; portage records listing workers by name, job, pay scale, amount of time worked and days off the job for hospitalization; and frieght records, including the shipper's name, address, destination of goods, cost of shipping and amount of goods shipped.
