Default What is between the side wheels?

Sorry to bug this group with so many questions, but I have another. Near the stern of the side-wheeler California, maybe between where the side wheels where located, every summer when the water level is down, a rectangular puddle forms in this area. It is about 8 foot by 12 foot. The larger of these dimensions being across the boat. Is this the engine? Or maybe something else?

Inquiring minds want to know..

Many Thanks again,

Dave Freeman
