"California" to be dug further

Good news, the landowner of the “California” Has offered a backhoe to dig the site. An exploratory probe will begin when the harvest is finished in a few more weeks, if the weather holds.

A small test hole dug earlier at the bow, found one small nail, brick fragments and a layer of brown ooze which might have been the wood from the deck.

The “California” was built in Maine and in 1849 steamed around the horn to Sacramento Ca. On Aug 1850 it was snagged in Northern California and was quickly looted to make a gold rush bar and courthouse.

63 tons, side wheeler, about 96 feet long.

Dave,
Good luck with your effort and please keep us posted. If you have photos of artifacts, etc, please post them here, if you can.

The brick fragments are very soft from being in moist soil for so many years. They ones recovered are now drying next to my wood stove, I will send you some pictures when I can.
