Default River Ramblings - Howard Steamboat Museum

The cally-ope is calling you! Yes, steamboat buffs and buffettes, it's that time once again! Program #7 in my RIVER RAMBLINGS educational lecture series will take place at the Howard Steamboat Museum on SATURDAY, JULY 16th at 3:00 PM (EDT). These programs are always scheduled for late afternoon, as it enables steamboat fanatics to ride the Str. BELLE OF LOUISVILLE on her afternoon public cruise (12-2 PM) and have plenty of time to drive over to the museum. For information on the BELLE schedule, visit Steamboat Belle of Louisville - Excursions, Dance Cruises, Dinner Cruises, Charters, Weddings on the Ohio River.

This is the Steamboat Bicentennial Year, when we are celebrating 200 years of steamboating! Our speaker this year is Mr. Chuck Parrish, retired historian for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District. Chuck's presentation is entitled, "Mr. Roosevelt's Riverboat Remembered - The 1811 Voyage of the New Orleans". Chuck, well known in river affairs, is also chairman of the Steamboat Bicentennial Committee of the Rivers Institute at Hanover College, as well as being a member of the board of directors of the Howard Museum.

For those who haven't been with us previously, the museum is located at 1101 East Market Street in Jeffersonville, Indiana, opposite Jeffboat. The program will take place, as usual, in the museum's 1880's carriage house, which is NOT air conditioned save by God's free air and fans! So, do dress comfortably! Cold lemonade, ice water and Judy's "Steamboat Chocolate Chip" cookies will be served. Following the program, some gather in groups at the waterfront restaurants (Kingfish, Rocky's, Buckheads, etc.) for libations, food and fellowship well into the evening.

The traveling steamboat exhibit sponsored by the Indiana Historical Society will be set up in the carriage house. Also, we will have another "Riverboat Rummage Sale", featuring gently used steamboat t-shirts, books, trinkets and memorabilia. All proceeds benefit the museum operating fund.

Another added attraction this year will be a unique exhibition of steamboat artifacts in neighboring New Albany, an easy, short drive of 20 minutes or less from Jeffersonville. The exhibit is entitled "BY THE RIVER'S EDGE" and will include many seldom seen river relics from private collections. The display, which runs from July 1-31, will be on the "second deck" of the historic Indiana Gas and Electric building at 138 East Spring Street in downtown New Albany. Admission is free and hours are Friday and Saturday 11 AM - 4 PM and Sunday 1-4 PM. An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 1st from 6-8 PM.

Admission to RIVER RAMBLINGS is $5 per person. Visit the museum website at Howard Steamboat Museum - Home Page for driving directions and other information. Watch for upcoming details of our Steamboat Bicentennial Celebration on September 23-24-25!

As always, ALL are welcome and I thank you very much for your support of the museum and its programs. Looking forward to seeing y'all soon!
