Default Steam Tender

Does anyone have information on steam tenders or machine boats of the 1830s? When Henry Shreve brought the snag boat Archimedes to the Red River Raft in 1833 he also had the Java, Souvenir, and Pearl. They have been described as tenders or machine boats. I have found no descriptions of them except that they were smaller than a "regular" steamboat.

Thanks,
Robert Gudmestad
