Growing up near Shippingport, PA (first commercial nuclear reactor) and experiencing the TMI meltdown locally (a few miles as the crow flies from Boiling Spring, PA where I lived at that time) and watching the news of the Japanese nuclear reactors leaking radiation scares me. This Japanese disaster should force us to look at our readiness. The earthquake followed by the tsunami was not unlike the heavy floods of 1884 and 1936 in the Ohio River Valley. Although the triggers differed, both the tsunami and Ohio River floods caused much devastation. Lives were lost. People were displaced. Relief efforts were formidable. Basics, food and water, were difficult to obtain.
My aunt kept a scrapbook of the searing images of the flood of 1936. Every city and town along the upper Ohio River the suffered. It took years to recover. When I make the time I will post the newspaper photos. The following link lists the high water levels at Pittsburgh from 1762-1940.
